Incorporated in 1854, this centrally located county is referred to by some as the Heart of Maine, and for good reason. The great location of Androscoggin County provides residents with about a half-hour drive to the coast and the mountains, as well as the state's largest city, Portland, and the state capital, Augusta. The Maine turnpike slices through the county, giving fast access to these surrounding cities.

Androscoggin County is also sparkling with beautifully pristine lakes, streams, ponds, and rivers which provide ample boating, fishing, and other outdoor activities that this rugged state is well known for. The summer season provides warm weather perfect for some amazing camping, forest hiking, and great fishing. Winter harnesses the cold, however, and creates multitudes of ice skating and cross-country skiing opportunities. Ice fishing is also popular on many of the winter-frozen lakes and ponds.

A county of many social events, Androscoggin is home to the Maine State Parade, Liberty Festival, Moxie Festival, Festival de Joie, and the Great Falls Balloon Festival. These are examples of how this area has become a booming economic center. Formally positioned around the textile and shoe industries, this area has been transformed into a tourism, manufacturing, and progressive health care leader. As a result, half of Maine’s population is situated within the thirty miles around Auburn and Lewiston, the "Twin Cities" of Androscoggin County. This lends itself to making health care the largest industry and job provider in the state.
